Bonnie Blue Flag-
Origins- During the 1860's tensions where heating up between the North and the South. These events led to a Civil War in America and people in the south started to create a new type of government and focused on Nationalism. People throughout America where excited and proud to fight in this war and many people made songs to show their pride and raise spirits in the army, this is where Bonnie Blue Flag comes in. The Bonnie Blue Flag sounds like a Union song but it was actually sung by confederate troops to remind them of their goals. This song was inspired by the Lone Star Flag that flew over Mississippi when they succeeded from the Union.
Composer- A southerner saw the flag being raised and was inspired to make a song about it. This man was Harry McHarthy and once he played this song to a crowd in New Orleans it was an instant hit. In the song he talks about how the North infringed on their rights and now they must fight to get them back. The song would soon become the unofficial song of the Confederacy. The Lone Star Flag will be used again in many different places to represent freedom.
How we should play it- In our piece we need to play this song as if we are off to fight in a war. So this part of Blue and the Grey needs to be upbeat and played almost like a marching song.
